Sizing Tips & Skier Types

Sizing Snowboards
Sizing Snowboards
As a general rule snowboards perform in a similar way to skis – shorter boards will be easier to turn at slow speeds but less stable at high speeds. Longer boards will be harder to turn at slow speeds but more stable at high speeds.
A good start point for starting length is somewhere between your chin and nose. Choose the shorter option if your are a beginner.
Kids under 12 should choose a board length that falls somewhere between their chest and chin.
Weight and boot size also play a factor in board length selection but don’t worry – if we see a reservation where the board length doesn’t look like the best choice for you, we’ll speak to you to confirm your choice.
Sizing Boots
Sizing Boots
Ski boots are sized using a system called mondopoint, which is the actual length of your foot in centimeters, If you’ve never worn correctly sized ski boots before you may feel a little surprised by the fit. They will feel a little tight when you stand up straight and your toes may touch the front of the boot, this is ok! When you bend your knees and drive your shins forward (as you will when you are skiing) your feet will seat back in the boot and there will be more space for your toes.
For snowboard boots the size measurement system system differs but the principles for correct fit are the same as for ski boots. This will help keep your heel from slipping inside the boot which will improve your riding and lessen the chance of foot pain.
How to Measure Your Feet at Home:
- Place two sheets of paper on the floor.
- Wear ski socks, stand evenly on the paper.
- Trace each foot's outline.
- Measure the length of both feet in centimeters and use the longer measurement as your mondo size.
Tips:
- Doing this with a friend makes the job much easier!
- Flying solo? Put the paper against a wall and place your heels against it, mark a line at the biggest toe and measure from the edge of the paper to the line.
Skier Type
Skier Type
Determines your release preference, or in simpler terms, when your skis detach from your boots in the event of an accident or fall. We calculate this based on your height, weight, boot length and skier type so it’s really important that we get the most accurate information as possible. If you’ve never heard of “skier type” before take a look at the image to help you decide what type you are.
Tuning & Repair
We offer a wide range of winter sports equipment services ranging from the basics like edging and waxing through binding brake replacements or boot buckle swaps, all the way to complex base repairs. All repairs are carried out using Wintersteiger machinery – the biggest brand in the ski repair industry. The cherry on top? Ski & Board
Tuning Services
Resurfacing the base and edges of skis and snowboards regularly can help prevent damage and dullness, enhancing edge control and overall performance. Precision machinery and experienced technicians manage the tuning process, making it beneficial for skiers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced.
Ski Binding
Flat Mount
Don’t love the idea of drilling through your brand new skis? Let us do it! Neptune has decades of experience in correctly mounting ski bindings, and the tools and jigs to install most major brands. As a thank you to our loyal customers we offer this service for half price if you purchase your new skis with us.
Ski Binding
Function Tests
Your ski bindings are the sole factor in keeping you attached to your skis when you need to be and safely separated from them when you don’t. They should be function tested at least once every season, after a major crash and any time you feel like something isn’t quite right with your setup. Here at Neptune we set your DIN (binding release) values to industry-wide standards and then check those values against an associated torque range based on your physical attributes and skier type. This means that you don’t just have to trust the number on your bindings – you know that they will hold or release at the right time.
If you have your bindings mounted by us this is also included in the service.

What to Expect
From a Professional Ski Boot Fit
Foot & Posture Analysis
Using Bootdoc’s Podoskop, we analyze your arch type, foot length, width, and instep volume. We also assess postural alignment from your ankles to your hips – essential for matching your biomechanics to the right boot design.
Flexibility Assessment
Still on the Podoskop, we measure how far your knees can track over your toes without your heels lifting. This helps determine the appropriate flex rating for your boots and supports long-term joint comfort.
Custom Footbeds
(Highly Recommended)
Stock footbeds? Useless. Our custom Bootdoc footbeds, heat-molded to your exact arch shape, improve comfort, posture, and heel hold. From flat-footed through to high arches, we’ve got you covered.
Skier Profile Consultation
While we measure, we chat. We want to know about your skiing history, your goals, and how you like to spend your time on the slopes. This conversation helps us guide you toward boots that not only fit well – but fit your lifestyle.
Shell Fit Check
We remove the liner from your boot and perform a traditional shell fit, placing your foot inside and measuring the space behind your heel to assess length and volume. It’s the first hands-on confirmation that we’re on the right track.
Full Test Fit
With liner and custom footbed reinstalled, you’ll test the boots while we go through a detailed fit checklist. We gather feedback and identify any pressure points or performance issues – before moving to final adjustments.
Precision Heat Molding
We heat the shell and liner separately, then reassemble for on-foot molding. Throughout the process, we monitor temperature with a digital thermometer and cool the boots with ice wraps to set the fit. This is your second chance to dial things in before we finish.
Final Fit & Aftercare
You’ll try on the finished boots, confirm your satisfaction, and receive expert tips on buckling, adjustment features, and long-term boot care. And remember: your fit is guaranteed for life. If it ever feels off – next week or next season – we’ll make it right.

Terms to Know
Mondopoint
Mondopoint is an international sizing system that measures foot length in centimeters, sometimes displayed in millimeters (e.g., 26cm or 260mm).
To determine your Mondopoint size:
- Place your foot on a piece of paper without shoes or socks, with your heel at the bottom edge and corner of the paper.
- Draw lines at the tip of your foot and at the widest point (at the big toe joint).
- Measure from the base of your heel to the mark at the tip of your toe in a straight line. This measurement is your Mondopoint.
Mondopoint sizes include half sizes, but the shell size remains the same between boot sizes (a size 26 (260 mm) and a size 26.5 (265 mm are the same shell).
Last
Last is the width reference of the boot shell in the toe are, or toe box. Depending on the width of your foot we can select a narrow, medium or wide last as the starting point before fit customization. Last width can vary between manufacturers but as general rule narrow lasts or 2mm narrower than a medium last, and wide lasts are 2mm wider than a medium last.
Flex
The flex rating of ski boots refers to how much force is required to initiate forward lean into the boot. Think about applying pressure when you turn your skis. Flex ratings generally run from a value of 60 – 130, but it’s not completely standardized and a the same flex rating can feel quite different between boot brands and even models. Most recreational skiers will benefit from a flex rating of 60-80 for women, and 80-110 for men. If you are a heavier or more aggressive skier you may fall outside of these general guidelines.
Snowboard Boots
We know that great snowboarding starts with the right boots – because no board, binding, or base grind can make up for a poor fit. That’s why we bring the same level of expertise and detail to our snowboard boot fittings as we do to ski boots.
Snowboard boots vary more between brands than most people realize. That’s why our fitting process goes beyond just size – we focus on heel hold, liner customization, and volume matching to eliminate discomfort and give you total board control.
What to Expect
Finding The Right Boot for You
Discussion, measurements and footbeds
Just like the ski boot fit, we’ll take all the measurements we need to match you with a boot that works. We’ll also get a rundown of your experience and discuss specific features you are looking for like Boa dials or laces. This is also the stage that we’ll discuss and advise on custom footbeds. Trust us, these things work, and your feet will thank you.
Boot Selection
Snowboard boot sizing is notoriously inconsistent across brands, but we’ve curated a selection to fit a wide range of foot shapes, volumes, and insteps. We’ll match you to the best boot based on your foot anatomy, riding style, and preferences.
Test Fit
You’ll try the boots on and go through our detailed fit checklist. We listen carefully to your feedback to assess the initial feel and determine if we need to make changes before heat molding.
Fit Assessment & Heel Hold
We go beyond “good enough.” Heel hold is everything in snowboarding, and we aim to eliminate it completely. We assess the boot’s fit across all zones – especially the heel pocket – and determine whether liner modifications will be needed.
Heat Molding
We heat up the liners (and modify them if necessary) to mold them precisely to your feet and ankles. This speeds up the break-in process and gives you a true custom fit. If more volume is needed in specific areas, we add spacers or padding at this stage.
Final Fit & Aftercare
After molding, we re-check your fit and apply any final customizations – especially for heel lift. This might be as minor as a foam wedge or as major as a custom-cut butterfly pad contoured to your ankle bones and glued to the liner. We’ll also walk you through boot care, lacing techniques, and storage tips.
Snowboarders Deserve the Same Attention to Fit
No shortcuts here. Just like our ski boots, your snowboard boot fit is guaranteed for life. If something doesn’t feel right – now or years from now – bring them in. We’ll take care of it.
Boot Adjustments
If you suffer from cold feet, cramped arches, heel slip, shin pain or any other foot pain we will take a lot at your boots and tell you if we think we can resolve the problem.
Unfortunately, sometimes the only resolution is a correctly fitted boot but if we can work with your existing ones we will.
