Austria

Ski Austria Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, Ellmau

The Wilder Kaiser-Brixental area is the largest ski area in Austria including ten villages, which are connected by over 140 ski lifts. The area boasts over to a 4000-foot vertical drop and has over 60 quaint mountain restaurants dispersed among the hundreds of ski trails. Entry level skiers will find most of the wide open, gentle slopes located on top of the mountain where they can enjoy the fantastic scenery and lunch stops. Lifts can be ridden back down the mountain for those not up to the longer and more difficult trails leading down to our village of Ellmau. The more experienced skiers will enjoy skiing mile after mile of well-marked un-crowded slopes. One favorite destination is Mt. Hohe Salve, the site of a world famous downhill ski run. After watching hang gliders during lunch at the revolving outdoor eating area, you can enjoy skiing down challenging runs for over five miles to the village of Soll. Another treat is to spend the morning skiing to a mountain restaurant called Tenngaufhaus, 2500 feet above the village of Hopfgarten, where we have lunch. Skiers are amazed to learn that the restaurant was built in the 1520’s! There is also an igloo village with an ice bar that is a real treat. Our area is called Skiwelt, and it also interconnects with the North section of Kitzbuhel. For the beginners and experts alike, this area never seems to run out of things to see and do! At night one can even ride a sled from the top of the Austberg Mountain down a 3.5-mile lite trail back down to our hotel!

Ski Italy Alta Badia & Super Dolomiti

The Super Dolomiti is the largest interconnected ski area in the world. It has more than 470 modern ski lifts. That is over 100 lifts larger than all the resorts in Colorado and Utah combined! You can ski mountain-to-mountain and village-to-village over miles of well-groomed and well-marked trails. Our hotel is located in the Alta Badia, which is in the heart of this magnificent ski area. Entry level skiers can spend all day in the Alta Badia on dozens of interconnected gentle runs including the 5 ½ mile run from Pralongia all the way down to St. Cassiano! Intermediate skiers can enjoy a day skiing from LaVilla (our village), to Pralongia, down to the town of Armentarola where a shuttle bus is taken to the top of Falzarego Pass. A cable car takes you up another 2000 vertical feet to the top of Mt. Lagazuo where you ski down over 4000 vertical feet to Scutetoni to enjoy an Italian barbecue. From there, you can ski a short distance and hop on a horse drawn sleigh that will pull you to an area where you can ski all the way back to the hotel. Intermediates can also enjoy Sellaronda, a ski trip where you follow the signs and ski all the way around the Sella Mt. Group and then back to our hotel. It involves 16 lifts, 5 villages, 4 mountain passes, and 28 miles of unbelievable views and interesting sights. For the Advanced and Expert skiers with a lot of endurance, Dennis will take you to ski Marmalada, the glacier. This involves 27 lifts, 4 villages, and 53 miles of distance on skis and lifts. After reaching the hamlet of Malga Ciapela, you ride 3 cable cars and one elevator to the top of Marmolada. After enjoying the incredible views from the “top of the world,” you ski down 6178 vertical feet and then back to our village! This ski area is absolutely as good as skiing gets and can be enjoyed at all ability levels.

Other Activities – There are many villages nearby for the shoppers and sight seers. The nearby village of San Cassiano has a nice wood carving shop. Thirty minutes away is Cortina, which is where the 1956 Winter Olympics was held and many scenes from the James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only” was filmed. Cortina has a variety of shopping, and great skiing is still a part of the area. You may also wish to take a day off and drive to Venice, one of the world’s most interesting and historical cities with incredible shopping at low prices.
